2021-10-27

On October 14th , 2021, Lily Li, Partner and general manager of LDPi (China branch), was invited to the “2021 LIGHT TALK WITH SPACE” forum in Xi’an to share her experience with other lighting designers and professionals.

Questioning herself with “Where are we actually looking towards?” and “How far can we actually see?”, Lily discussed the topic of “Emotional lighting and the design of the flexible space”.

She shared her point of view based the data of the human sight and took the North area of the Beijing TaiKoo Li Sanlitun as an example to discussed how to find the “Right Facade”. She also analyzed the lighting color temperature and distribution used in Beijing SKP.

She also highlighted that Xi’an SKP improved the successful contemporary design recipe used in Beijing.

Relations between the internal glow of stores and public area lighting

This project encourages each store to display goods right outside its unified storefront at the limit of the public space. This allow the lighting to have three layers: the soft functional public area, the accent lighting outside the store front and the store’s interior lighting.

The sense of ritual of lighting point

The lighting not only has its function of being soft in public areas or revealing the goods, but is can be decorative to match not only the ceiling pattern, but also the floor patterns and floors space allocated to each store.

The origin of group point

In close communication with the interior designer, LDPi made use of various patterns of lighting layout from single, twin, triple to quadruple heads with lower quantity and wider beam angle in the public space and more to conveniently highlight products with flexibility in the concessions with narrow beam angles.

During the forum,  the vice general manager of Xi’an International Design Center - Suyun Wan, the main designer of enlighten Lighting Design (Beijing ) Co., LtdLighting - Xiaoming Yang, the main designer of ATELIER XI - Xi Chen, the vice general manager of COLORS - Yun Teng, the vice general manager of HercuLux - Wei Peng and the vice general manager and designer of ATL LIGHTING DESIGN - Min Wei shared their opinions and working experience, the discussion between lighting design, architecture and lighting products made all the audience learned a lot.

At the end, the founder and CEO of eLIGHT - Chuanshuang Cao hold the round table talk, when the topic came the “human/healthy lighting”. Lily expressed that LDPi always take health factor as important as safety and aesthetics in the design process. If a plan could not fit the health standard, it is not a feasible plan. This also should be the bottom line of every designer.

Besides, a interior designer mentioned he usually use the data from the lighting factory to perform calculations, but the final completion are not always satisfactory, so he started to question the credibility of these data.

Lily answered this question based on experience: “When we faced the quality control problem, first of all, we should choose a credible lighting manufacturer to ensure the quality of lights; secondly, designers as the leader of the project should not totally rely on the data, but also need to consider testing the adaptability between the lights and different space or others influencing factors; last but not the least, the tender phase is important to ensure we are using the proper light, altough the sample sealing may not occur in some projects.”
